AdventAdvent Begins With Expectation Begins With Expectation

Scripture: “We wait in hope for the Lord; He is our help and our shield.” — Psalm 33:20

Advent is a season built on one word: expectation. Before the angels filled the sky, before shepherds ran to the manger, before wise men made their long journey, there was waiting. God’s people lived generation after generation in hopeful anticipation for a Messiah who would make all things right.

As dads, we know this feeling — the tension between what we hope for and what we see right now. We hope for peace in our homes, but hit conflict. We hope for spiritual growth, but feel stretched thin. We hope to be steady fathers, but some days we’re exhausted or overwhelmed.

Advent reminds us that God does His best work in the waiting. Israel waited 400 years between the final Old Testament prophet and the birth of Jesus. Silence doesn’t mean absence. Delay doesn’t mean denial. Waiting is often the training ground where God strengthens our hearts, sharpens our faith, and teaches us to rely on Him.

This season offers an opportunity — not just to decorate or prepare gifts, but to prepare your spirit. What if December didn’t just become a blur of errands, expenses, and expectations? What if it became a month where your family sees you leaning into God with renewed expectancy?

Start small. Pray as a family. Light a candle and read a verse before dinner. Pick one moment each day to pause and thank God that He came near — and still comes near.

Advent isn’t about perfection. It’s about expectation — trusting that God is working, even when

we’re waiting.
